The Switchback is Nemo's closed-cell foam sleeping pad: no valve, no pump, nothing to puncture. Hexagonal moulded nodes give it more thickness and a warmer, more forgiving surface than a flat foam mat, and it folds concertina style onto the outside of a pack.

Who it's for

Anyone who wants a pad that cannot fail. Closed-cell foam has no valve, no baffles and nothing to puncture - you can drop it on a stick, sit on it at a lunch stop, strap it to the outside of a pack and it does not care. Thru-hikers, scouts, and anybody who has woken up on a flat air mat at 3am.

What R-value means for you

R-value 2 covers spring through autumn, and the way the Switchback gets there is clever: a metallized thermal film layer reflects heat back at you instead of letting the ground take it, and 15% more heat-trapping space than a standard foam pad holds it there. That is a warmer night than the category usually delivers.

Comfort and noise

Hexagonal nodes moulded from dual-density Axiotomic foam create Hypnoelastic zones that conform to your body - firmer where you need support, softer where you need give. Silent, obviously: there is no air to move, so rolling over makes no noise at all.

Inflation and packing

None required. Unfold and lie down, which at the end of a long day is worth more than it sounds. It folds concertina-style rather than rolling, so it packs flat against a pack rather than as a fat tube.

Weight

415 g in the Regular and 300 g in the Short, packing to 51 x 13 x 14 cm and 51 x 13 x 10.75 cm.

Durability and repair

Nothing to repair. That is the whole argument for foam: no puncture kit, no slow leak, no night spent on the ground. Many people carry one as their only pad, and plenty carry one under an air mat for winter.
